Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez split: What happened?

Selena Gomez, 20, and Justin Bieber, 18. Young, adorable, rich. First loves. He rented out the Staples Center just so they could watch Titantic privately, together. On one of his latest songs, he croons, "If I was your boyfriend, I'd never let you go..."
But now the big news is out: The two are over, a "source" telling E! News they have gone their separate ways.
So what happened?
As with many star couples, the two have been pulled in different directions, different locations. He's on tour, promoting his latest album. She's been filming a Wizards of Waverly Place reunion special, The Wizards Return: Alex versus Alex, for the Disney Channel.
But some celeb wags are using the word "dumped" to describe the breakup, as in she dumped him.
There have been recent clues: On Oct. 30, Bieber posted a photo on Instagram with the word "Lingse" which fans unscrambled to be "Single." But he deleted it. Most of his photos lately are of his pet Hamster, PAC, who is with him on tour.
During his October interview with Oprah Winfrey, she asked if he and Selena had to use different exits and separate cars to avoid paparazzi and crowds of fans and he said, "I don't keep her separate from me because I don't ever want to make her feel like I'm ashamed of her." But that was last month.
This week, Bieber was spotted having a good time at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show taping, asking for phone numbers from the models and hanging out with model Barbara Palvin after the show, reports the New York Post. Palvin also popped up in a Twitter photo with Bieber and rapper Lil Twist.
Gomez retweeted the photo with a simple response: " . . . "
Gomez, on the other hand, is quickly being linked to Gregg Sulkin, her Wizards co-star, who posted a "fun and flirty" photo of the two of them together.
